It is not every day you come across a celebrity couple with a successful marriage. Many should take advice from country’s super couple, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, who have managed to have a happy marriage for over 20 years. Just like they enjoy spending most of their time together and doing things with one another, they have decided to embark on something new and have made this announcement together. As they have proven in the past, their decisions have always been for the best, and with their family, fans and lifestyle in mind, they thought this decision of theirs was the best for them at this time.
Falling In Love
Just when fans thought they could not get enough of Faith and Tim on stage together, they were in for a real treat when the two went public with their relationship. After just a few months of dating, in September 1996, they made their first official public appearance at Andre Agassi’s Grand Slam for Children event. However, as many fans were beginning to love this new blossoming romance, it did not mean people were not judging Hill at the same time.
In On The Secret
As one of the music industry’s most adorable and longest lasting couple, the duo chose to mark their 21st wedding anniversary by letting the world in on a secret many did not see coming. The unexpected news will mark a new beginning for the couple, but to understand the significance of this change, it’s crucial that fans would know the reason behind it. While it’s not rare for celebrities to keep secrets from their fans, we were all literally on the edge of our seats.
Fans Didn’t See It Coming
Faith Hill was going through a divorce and Tim McGraw was dating Kristine Donahue during their initial meeting, back in 1994. The pair was introduced at the New Faces Show in Nashville. Despite the fact their interaction backstage was brief, it was sure to lead to something huge that would last more than two decades. This was just the beginning – but eventually, it led to their most recent and unexpected announcement. Fans didn’t see this coming and weren’t prepared with how to react to it either!
Teaming Up On Tour
In 1996, two years after having initially met, the two country stars embarked on a joint spring tour titled, ‘Spontaneous Combustion.’ The name was relatively fitting for the two singers, but when the tour began, they were still not an item. McGraw had just called off his engagement with Kristine Donahue, and Hill had become engaged to record producer Scott Hendricks. While it seemed their romantic lives were heading in opposite directions, everything changed on the first night of their ‘Spontaneous Combustion’ tour.
The chemistry between the pair was palpable when they first took to the stage together. As the tour went on, the pair never denied their admiration for one another, and their attraction was clear. The situation was not the finest since Hill was set to marry Scott, but her feelings for McGraw were growing. The more time the singers were spending with another, the tougher the choice became for Hill to make. Was she going to stay with her fiance, or were her feelings for Tim too strong?
Hill’s feelings became more clear the first night after the concert when McGraw invited her back to his dressing room, and the pair shared their first kiss. It was at this point that the pair realized how much they wanted to be together, and it was time for Hill to make the tough decision and call off her engagement. Once she managed to do so, the singers could finally be with one another and pursue a relationship beyond just tour mates. It was like they were finally becoming the couple they were meant to be.
Unapologeticly In Love
While the media voiced their opinions on Faith for her controversial decisions, Hill was not going to keep silent on the matter and hit back saying, “If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else, I can’t control that.” The country singer added, “But I wasn’t about to let Tim slip through my hands. And I had more self-worth and self-respect to not.” Her bold position on the matter only stood as more proof that her and Tim were really in love.
The Unexpected News
In the same year the pair announced they were officially a couple, they also announced that they were expecting their first baby together. After a whirlwind romance, their baby news came as a shock to everyone, but the couple could not have been happier, and this showed when they hit the red couple together with Hill sporting her visible baby bump. However, McGraw wished to tie the knot before the arrival of their baby, as he knew Hill was the woman he wanted to be with forever.
Popping The Question
Their tour marked a special moment for the duo as McGraw recalls “it was raining and stuff and we’d been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I said… I looked at her, grabbed her by the hand, and dropped forward onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, ‘I’m really serious. I want you to marry me.” When he finished his show, he found “Yes!” written on a mirror backstage and the rest was history.
As the couple did not do things conventionally, their wedding was to be no different. They were amongst one of the first celebrity couples to pull off a surprise wedding. Hill and McGraw invited their family and friends over for a game of softball and a concert in McGraw’s hometown of Rayville, Louisiana, but realized they had been tricked when they turned up. Rather, they arrived to an official ceremony, with Faith, now three months pregnant, wearing a simple white dress, and Tim in jeans.
Hill and McGraw made their first public appearance as a married couple in early 1997 when they attended the American Music Awards. Clear for all to see, that time did not matter, and the couple was madly in love. Faith was now months into her pregnancy and was glowing in her white baby doll dress on the arm of her new husband. With their family soon to be extended, the couple was all smiles, and their love for one another was undeniable.
Although their romance may have been controversial when they started dating, Tim highlighted that their feelings for one another were like nothing they had felt before they met each other. He expressed, “I mean I think we had a pretty instant knowledge that we were going to be together forever.” While many celebrity couples crumble under the light of the entertainment industry, this powerful musical duo has proven otherwise and have shown they made the right decision in the early stages.
Green Eyed Girlfriend
While the couple could not hide their feelings from each other for too long, it seems others became aware of it before anything even happened. In a rather uncomfortable encounter when McGraw’s girlfriend had seen Faith in the flesh, McGraw admitted, “For me, there was an intense physical attraction. I guess my girlfriend saw it in my eyes. She said, ‘I don’t want you around her.”” It seems that his ex was right and, unfortunately for her, she was the one soon to be dumped at the time.
Baby On Board
Just as fans adored their favorite country stars together, they could not wait to get a glimpse of their new addition. After many public appearances sporting her baby bump, Hill gave birth in May 1997, to a daughter named Gracie Katherine. After her daughter’s birth, Faith took some time away from music and her career to focus on her family. It was not long after however, that Hill was pregnant once again. Tim and Faith’s family were expanding fast, and they were proving to the world they were stronger than ever.
What Happens On Tour…
The couple that tours together seems to stay together… all the time. While they had a life together on the road and at home, Hill and McGraw liked to spend all their time together backstage too. They decided to name their joint tour bus, the love bus and Hill admitted that “a lot goes on in that bus.” While many relationships are under strain while touring, with flings or groupies, these two stars remained loyal throughout their time on the road.
As their family was expanding, Hill was making being a mother her priority over anything, and constantly gushed about them in interviews. Their second child, a daughter Maggie Elizabeth, was born in 1998, and Hill admitted that she hated being away from her children. She even feared being away and expressed, “I can’t even say what my greatest fear is because I, I can’t even imagine. Being without my family … I can’t even say it because it makes me cry.”
Making Sweet Music
After four years of touring, Hill decided to take a well-deserved break for three years to focus on raising her children. When she decided to return, she gave her fans exactly what they wanted, and joined forces with her husband for a duet, for a song titled, “It’s Your Love.” The fans loved it, and it became an instant hit, leading to the couple to team up once again. While they may have been successful in their own right, Faith and Tim made the perfect duo again.
Tim may have used Faith for inspiration for his music, but as soon as their children came along, he shifted to focus on his family. He explained, “It gives everything a focus,” adding, “You feel like you got your arms around everything, and you know where your life’s headed. You just find a peace you never had before.” Both Tim and Faith found a new love in their lives following the births of their daughter, and they found a new meaning to life.
Award Winning Couple
The success of the pair as a music duo was shown when “It’s Your Love” stayed at the number one spot for six weeks and even went to win an Academy of Country Music Award. The song means most to the couple themselves with Faith stating that when they perform it live, it [doesn’t] feel like anybody else was really watching.” The loved-up couple were most serious about one another and pledged from the beginning of their marriage that they would never spend more than three days apart.
Faith made her comeback in 1998 when she released her new album with the title of her own name. Already known for her country style, this new album shifted towards a more pop-orientated sound. She also released duets with her husband on the album, including “Let Me Let Go” and “The Secret Of Life,” which became fan favorites. The success the duo had when working together led the married couple to announce they would be touring together, pleasing all their fans once again.
Flying The Coop
It’s ironic to think that even if your parenting skills work perfectly, your kids still leave you. As Tim and Faith are finding out, preparing for that eventuality is tough. While their youngest is still at home, they know that in the next two years, they’ll be all alone. They want their children to succeed in the big wide world but know how empty the house will be when they’re gone, and faith especially is struggling with the idea.
Expanding The Brood
With the couple announcing they would be going back on tour in 1998 after having two daughters together, many believed the couple would not have time for more children. Faith and Tim had other ideas though, with Tim admitting, “Ideally, we’d love five kids.” However, he was not going to be fussy when it came to the gender of the children, stating, “I always wanted boys, but in a way I want it to stay this way. Just keep having girls. That way I’ll always dress good.”
Together We Tour
The co-headlining tour in 2000, Soul2Soul, was a smash hit for Faith and Tim. Their decision to tour together was both financially rewarding and preferable for the couple who could spend every day together with their daughters alongside them. They allowed themselves to have a successful career while focusing heavily on their marriage and love for one another, choosing to be together as much as they could. That is not to say the tabloids did not create their own stories about rumored split stories.
Hitting Back At Rumors
Having spoken up about her romantic life in the past, Faith was not going to keep silent when rumors of a rocky marriage hit the headlines. She said, “I’ve had an affair with my makeup artist, a female; an affair with my hairstylist; my marriage is on the rocks; Maggie is not Tim’s child, the naysayers. I don’t need their approval. I have too much going on. If that’s their entertainment, fine.” While rumors affect many couples relationships, Faith and Tim were sure not to let it affect theirs.
The couple was not shy to speak about their love for one another, even when not defending their relationship. When interviewed on the red carpet, Faith would gush about her husband and expressed, “Tim has given me confidence and strength and my foundation. He makes me feel like I can conquer the world.” In 2001, the family expanded once again with the couple welcoming their third daughter, Audrey. Everything was going well for the McGraw family, until Tim hit a roadblock.
It is public knowledge that Tim discovered his father was Tug McGraw only when finding his birth certificate, but he did not choose to deal with it until he met Faith. He said “I knew I had that instability and dysfunction in me, from the way I grew up. And when I met Faith, I knew I needed her in my life–to keep me stable, solid and on track.” This was not the only thing that Tim’s doting wife helped him through either.
Standing Up For Faith
Faith Hill’s biggest fan is, of course, her loving husband and, he was not going to let anyone bring his gorgeous wife down. Tim is always the first to come to Faith’s defense when anyone tried to put her down. Tim stated, “Critics who attack my wife bug me.” He added, “It makes me want to pay ’em a visit so I could give ’em a good punch in the nose.” No one wants to face a protective husband that is for sure.
They may love their family and their music, but they are also very passionate about the United States. The patriotic family is keen to show their respect for the armed forces, and in 2003, Hill and McGraw sang to the military crowd and spoke highly of the troops. At the Army post in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Tim also said of his wife, “Faith is just cool, she’s really a smart, smart lady that has got everything together and knows her priorities.”
It was in 2008 that Tim needed the strength and support of his wife the most. After admitting that he could not go on stage without having a drink or two, his struggles soon became apparent, and he decided it was time to kick his addiction. Tim said, “Faith saved my life in a lot of ways—from myself more than anything. I can go down a dark road sometimes, when you’re not feeling good about yourself, and she pulls me out. My wife makes me a better man.”
Hill’s support did not come without a price, however. It was rumored that Tim’s supportive wife gave him an ultimatum, and if he was not willing to combat his battles, then he was going to lose his family. With the fear of losing Faith, Gracie, Maggie Elizabeth, and Audrey, it was time for Tim to clean up his act and work on getting sober. Tim did just that and began training with a martial arts master, as well as, losing forty pounds.
Talking It Out
It seems as though the honeymoon period was never over for the loved-up pair, and they constantly prove their love and appreciation for one another. Tim revealed that the couple like to express themselves and said of Faith, “She would be perfectly happy if I told her, ‘Let’s get in the car and ride for two hours and talk.’ That would be as big a gift to her as anything.” It seems that talking things out really works considering the success of their marriage.
Back On Top
While in many cases for celebrities in the entertainment industry, the pressure of having both a successful marriage and career can seem too much. However, this was never the case for Faith and Tim even with both their hectic schedules. In 2009, McGraw starred in the award-winning The Blind Side alongside Sandra Bullock, and in 2010 Faith contributed to the film Country Strong official soundtrack. For both red carpet events, the couple walked side-by-side showing their complete and ultimate support for each other and their career.
Tim has admitted, “I’m very family-oriented. I’ve always been family-oriented. I came from a disoriented, dysfunctional family growing up. That probably instilled in me the need and want to have a strong family and a great foundation. That’s something I naturally gravitate towards.” When it came to the fatherly role in The Blind Side, he appeared to connect completely to his role, to which he gave an outstanding performance. It was his family values also gravitated him towards these kind of roles.
Inspiring One Another
Just as Tim has gushed and supported his wife in everything she does, Faith is sure to reciprocate the kindness. Noting that her husband is her biggest inspiration, she said, Tim inspires me every day in many, many ways.” She added that “I draw inspiration from his assertiveness and from watching him being a father and a husband.” Their confidence in sharing with their world their feelings for one another proved that not even a few critics and their rumors could affect them.
Even when McGraw’s album “Two Lanes of Freedom” was released in 2013, the attention was less on his music and more on his relationship with Hill. Once again, the couple spoke out with Hill saying that the rumors “seem to be running like crazy right now for some reason. It’s perplexing. I don’t know why ‘happy’ can’t be a story.” Tim spoke out too, saying, “We’ve been married 17 years, and since the first week we were married those things were out, we don’t even think about it.”
It’s always a hard time for any parent to watch their child flee the nest and head for college. This milestone in their life marks their transition into adulthood and Tim and Faith felt this when Maggie went to college. Tim said “It’s beautiful and it’s sad all at one time, you know, you can’t wait for them to sort of see what they make of themselves and do with themselves when they get out from under your umbrella, but you’re also nervous and sad because you’re gonna miss ’em.”
During an interview with Oprah, McGraw emotionally discussed his family life and stated that behind all the fame, “we close our door at home we are husband and wife and a mother and a father.” As for Hill, he said, “I think about the fact that we’re married and the fact that we raised these three beautiful daughters. And then I think about having three daughters and having [Hill] for their mom. It’s a pretty cool thing for those girls to have her.”
Tim and Faith may have helped one another through life’s struggles, but they also helped Hill’s brother, Zachary White. In 2013, it was revealed that White was going down a bad path and struggling with addiction. He later said, “I made my share of mistakes in the past, but Faith showed me that I could be a better person, I turned my life around, and I owe much of that to Faith and Tim. If it weren’t for them, there’s no telling where I’d be now.”
With two such gifted parents, it is not surprising that Tim and Faith’s daughters have inherited their musical talents. However, Faith stressed how she wanted her children to know it takes work to get what they want. She said, “The one thing we stress is that you don’t get things handed to you on a silver platter — you have to work for the things you want, they know it takes hard work.” She then added, “As a parent, you don’t want to stand in the way of their dreams.”
A New Duet
Tim and Faith teaming up to duet together may have drawn in huge success, but in 2015, Faith allowed another leading lady to stand on stage and perform on stage with her husband. While on tour, Tim called upon his 18-year-old daughter Gracie to perform and duet the single, “Here Tonight.” The father-daughter duet was a huge milestone in the talented family, and Faith watched over with complete bride. She couldn’t resist the urge either to go on stage and join them.
Enjoying The Moment
It seems that time is nothing for the pair since, with over 20 years having performed together, Tim is still in awe every time his wife performs. He confessed, “It amazes me every night, every chance I get to sing with her.” It even seems that his wife’s talents are slightly intimidating, and Tim’s nerves happen to get the better of him when they’re performing with each other on stage. He explained, “When you see somebody you love up there, it’s a lot more.”
Keeping The Family Together
Faith has made her priorities for her family clear when she chose to focus on her daughters and take a break from her career. This did not go unnoticed by Tim who lovingly expressed, “She’s the light of our whole family’s life. She keeps everything going for us. We all strive to be like my wife, everybody in our family. If your wife holds the example for everybody in your family, that’s a good thing.” Even 21 years later, Tim continues to be in complete awe of his wife.
Meet The Parents
The moment Tim met his daughter’s boyfriend was quite the memorable, if not scary, one. He recalled, “We’re doing a barbecue, so I’m in the kitchen, and I forget that he’s coming. I have a white apron on and a knife, and I’m trimming meat up, so I’ve got chunks of meat all over this white apron, blood everywhere.” Gracie’s boyfriend was greeted by the country singer covered in blood and holding a knife – not the best timing to be bringing someone home!
Pushing Each Other’s Buttons
Amongst all the support and affection the sweet couple would always like to express, they did prove they were not as perfect as it seemed. Expressing this through their song lyrics, they sang, “I know that sometimes you hate me/We spend most of our days together with you trying to change me.” Even though this may have come as a surprise to fans, Faith added, “I like a good fight, I know how to press those buttons. And if I’m a little angry, I can press those buttons big time.”
Fighting With Faith
Even though they confessed they are like most ordinary couples and do fight, they did admit that instead of having big arguments, their arguments are hard to come by and are rather minor. When speaking of their last argument, Tim admitted, “I think the last thing we got, I didn’t load the dishwasher or something.” Most couples would probably take arguments over chores over the bigger things, but this just shows there is more love in their household than anything.
In 2017, Hill’s shrinking figure became clear when she was performing on stage, and this caused concern for the singer’s health. Doctors got involved in the situation and stated it was due to a combination of factors including hectic touring lifestyle, heart problems, and severe dehydration. People close to the star, however, hit back at any claims that suggested Faith was suffering from any problems and claimed her loss of weight was a result of her busy lifestyle and from working out more.
The Best Memories
After two decades being both romantically involved with one another and working together, the couple continues to admire each other and keep the fire alive when performing. On performing together, Tim said, “The memories we have created every time we have gone out have been the best memories of our career, and we have two kids in college, what else are we gonna do?” It seems the couple has come along way since they first met backstage all those years ago!
Making It Last
During their promotional tour of their new joint album, The Rest Of Our Life, they were asked what their secret was to such a successful marriage. McGraw jokingly said, “Well, she tolerates a lot, I think that’s probably the main reason.” Hill was quick to respond with, “You tolerate a lot too. I’m not the easiest person.” While they showed they were there for one another, Hill added that the reason their marriage has lasted is because, “We do actually like one another.”
It is not just their marriage that has lasted all this time, but their work together in their career has proven just as successful. In November 2017 they proved this when their joint debut album debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart. With their joint debut being such a hit, they were incredibly thankful stating, “We are especially grateful for our amazing fans and the talented folks who worked on the album with us, we are blessed to get to do this and, even more so, together.”
Return To Tour
In 2017, Faith and Tim made their big announcement that would please their dedicated fans. After many years performing apart, the married couple announced they would be collaborating on tour once again for their second Soul2Soul tour. With such excitement to be performing together once again, McGraw gushed about his wife, “when I’m on stage with her, it’s like NASCAR trying to keep up with an Indy car. She’s just that good. So, to watch her sing and see what she does is pretty inspiring.” A true country fairytale!
